Belgaum: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa evaded a direct answer to a question on granting adequate powers to the Lokayukta to investigate corruption charges against legislators, even as he maintained that his Government would like to give more teeth to it to bring down corruption. He was speaking to presspersons at the Sambra airport near here before leaving for Arabhavi to campaign for his party candidate and Minister for Urban Development Balachandra L. Jarkiholi on Friday. Asked whether he favoured empowering the Lokayukta to investigate corruption charges against the legislators, he said there was no such issue before the Government. He dismissed reports accusing him of being harsh with Lokayukta officials at a meeting in Bangalore on Thursday and said they were “false” and commended the Lokayukta for doing “good work”. On the preparedness of the Government to tackle problems arising out of power shortage, he said it would do its best to prevent the situation from going from bad to worse. The Government was taking steps to bridge the demand and supply gap created by previous governments. They lacked vision in terms of growth of the State. Hence, there was crisis in areas such as power generation. Mr. Yeddyurappa expressed confidence of the BJP winning the eight Assembly seats in the coming byelection.
