ON A MISSION: Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar called on Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi at the Secretariat in Chennai on Thursday.

CHENNAI: The first reactor of the Koodunkulam project is expected to be operational by the middle of 2009, Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar said here on Thursday.

The second plant is expected to be ready by the end of 2009, he told reporters.

About the progress of other works, he said construction of three 220-MW heavy-water reactors was apace, and work on a 500-MW Fast Breeder Reactor was progressing.

The Centre had given in-principle clearance for four 700-MW units and pre-project works were going on. Uranium projects were also being “aggressively” pursued, and one would be operational shortly.

On the issue of safety following the Mumbai terror attacks, Mr. Kakodkar said atomic energy establishments in the country had adequate security.

The security measures were being reviewed after the attacks and, if need be, more steps would be taken after it was completed.
