Technology to produce LED for white light illumination developed

Special Correspondent

All villages can be electrified by using new device along with solar cells

CHENNAI: A team of researchers from the Crystal Growth Centre of Anna University have developed a technology to produce light-emitting diode (LED) for white light illumination, which will help save electrical energy by up to 50 per cent. The device is expected to last up to one million hours.

Headed by the principal investigators J. Kumar and K. Bhaskar, the team has successfully demonstrated its ability to develop the LEDs.

The light reduces green house emissions and will be cost effective.

The principal investigators say electrification of all villages can be achieved by using this device, coupled effectively with solar cells.

Prof. Bhaskar explains their immediate plan is to develop ultra violet emitting LEDs, which can also be used for purifying drinking water.

“By introducing UV LEDs in the pipeline of urban and rural water supply, water safe from e-coli can be delivered.”

Prof. Kumar says the Centre is looking to collaborate with industry for mass production of the device.

The project, kicked off with seed grant of Rs.50 lakh from the Government of Tamil Nadu, got a further fillip with funding of Rs.6.4 crore coming in from the Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology, under the programme of nanoscience and technology.

Anna University Vice-Chancellor Mannar Jawahar says a unique facility established at the Centre will facilitate development of hardware-related electronic devices for high frequency and high temperature applications.

It can also deliver high efficiency solar cells for space applications.

Speaking to reporters, Prof. Jawahar said N. Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation, would be awarded the honorary doctorate at the 29th convocation of Anna University on Friday. K. Tamilmani, Chief Executive, Centre for Airworthiness and Certification, DRDO, Bangalore, would deliver the convocation address. A total of 550 candidates would receive their degrees in person and 89 from different colleges would receive gold medals.

A total of 66,861 candidates will be awarded degrees in-absentia.
