Four child workers rescued, including one from Orissa
Staff Reporter
Tirupur: Officials of the Department of Labour and the National Child Labour Project (NCLP) rescued four child workers, including a boy from Orissa, from textile and ancillary units, following raids over three days ending Thursday.
D. Vijayakumar, Project Director, NCLP, said Archana (8), a native of Theni, Chitra (12), who belongs to Gopichettipalayam, and Krishnamurthy (13), a resident of Tirupur, were rescued from garment manufacturing units situated at K.R.Nagar, Karuvampalayam and Pitchampalayam areas.
The Orissa boy, Roopak Kumar (8), was employed at a stitching unit at Kumaranandapuram.
Mr Vijayakumar said that Archana, Chitra and Krishnamurthy would be enrolled into special schools run by the National Child Labour Project in the city and its suburbs, while Roopak Kumar would be sent back to his native State for pursuing his higher education.
He further said that fines would be levied on the owners of the units from where the children had been rescued, under the Child Labour Act, 1986.
Mr Vijayakumar said that the age of the four children rescued was ascertained only after they were made to undergo radiology test at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.
Altogether, 25 child workers had been rescued from the city during the current financial year, so far.
