Pulse Polio drive on Sunday

First round of the programme to cover 2,90,497 children in district

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Elaborate arrangements have been made in the district for ensuring the smooth conduct and maximum coverage of Pulse Polio immunisation drive, the first round of which will be held on Sunday.

The district health administration and a task force with District Collector Sanjay Kaul as the chairperson, and senior health officials and representatives from various government departments, local bodies and voluntary organisations as members are coordinating the immunisation drive in the district.

In the district, the oral polio vaccine will be administered to 2,90,497 children under five years of age. The number of under-five children in urban area has been put at 84,164 and in the rural areas at 20,633.

Vaccine stocked

The vaccine has already been stocked with strong cold chain facilities. In the district, 113 ice-lined refrigerators, 99 deep freezers, 184 cold boxes, 3,726 vaccine cold boxes and as many vaccine carriers and 18, 192 ice packs have been arranged for transporting and storing vaccine in booths.

Vaccine buffer stocks have also been arranged at selected centres.

Officials said that 895 booths would be set up in urban areas and 1,981 booths in rural areas for administering the vaccine.

5,752 volunteers

The district health administration has trained 5,752 volunteers as vaccinators, to be deployed in the booths and 287 persons as supervisors to monitor and report booth activities.

Another 129 booths will be operated to cover tribal areas, urban slums, construction sites and other areas that are difficult to access. About 56 special booths are also being arranged in railway stations, bus stations, tourist spots and airport with the help of the Railways, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), the Tourism Department, the Airport Authority of India and the Rotary Club.

The booths at Thampanoor railway station, bus stand and airport will function from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Twenty mobile booths are also being arranged

A control room will function in the district medical office on December 20 and 21 for monitoring the programme.
