Details: Chairman, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of South Alabama, Mohammed S. Alam releasing a souvenir at a conference at Puliyur near Karur on Thursday. Vice-chairman of Chettinad College of Engineering M.A.M.R. Muthaiah receives the first copy. KARUR: The road map for the ongoing global transition to a knowledge society has to start with revamping education to suit the needs of the emerging industry practices. Quick dissemination of knowledge would help achieve the desired level, according to Vice-Chairman, Chettinad College of Engineering and Technology, M.A.M.R. Muthaiah here on Thursday. Presiding over the inaugural of the International Conference on Computing Communication and Networking organized by the college Mr. Muthaiah observed that with India having emerged a major player in global information technology services and IT enabled services, was now poised to take on the core IT industry itself. That entailed deploying infrastructure and human resources towards product design and process applications. In that new role also has to cope with the ongoing global transition to a knowledge society. The road map for the transition must start with revamping education to suit the needs of the emerging industry demands, he added. Industry thrived on innovation in technology and creative thinking. Quick dissemination of knowledge was a must to reap the benefits of innovation and creativity. International conferences such as the present could play a pivotal role in that process, he said. Observing that learning and innovation would be the prime portfolios in the scheme of a successful engineer, chief guest and Chairman, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of South Alabama, Mohammed S. Alam, pointed out that the international conference offered enough scope for the students and researchers who have assembled to forge ahead with focus and enthusiasm. Roy Daniels Professor and Chairman, Department of Computer Science, Louisiana Sate University, Los Angeles, S. Sitharama Iyengar, pointed out that in the years to come engineers should be exposed to a greater degree of inter-disciplinary approach. Observing that some papers in the conference address the issue, Dr. Iyengar noted that even the curriculum has evolved into allowing inter-disciplinary approach. Speaking on the frontier technologies in engineering, Dr. Iyengar spoke of the recent heightened interest in sensor networking that was getting increased. Optimising and harnessing energy would be some of the other areas of interest to the researchers, he said. Associate Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of North Texas, Denton, Kamesh Namuduri, future engineers had to appreciate and balance different cultures and maintain good interaction with the industry and institutions. Principal A.P. Kabilan welcomed the gathering while secretary A. Subramanian proposed a vote of thanks.
