Spoken English project launched in Yercaud Hills

Special Correspondent

YERCAUD: Tamil Nadu Government’s unique project of catching the rural students young and teaching them the nuances of ‘spoken English’ to enable them to face the challenges of the competitive world was launched in the tribal belt of Yercaud Hills here on Thursday.

About 30 tribal and dalit students studying in classes 3, 4 and 5 in various elementary and middle residency schools spread over the Shevaroyan Hills were chosen after evaluating their educational performances and brought under ‘Special English Language Teaching,’ which would be imparted under the guidance of language experts.

Inaugurating the project at Yercaud Higher Secondary School, Collector J. Chandrakumar asked the students to develop their spoken English skills as it had become imperative for rural students to shrug off their complacency and inferiority complex and acquire self confidence and determination to do well in a competitive world.

Mr. Chandrakumar pointed out that Tamil Nadu was the leader in the IT industry because of its workforce’s strong grasp over the language.

“Hence you also should show the penchant for English language and learn the same,” he told students.

For outstanding students

He further said that outstanding students would be assisted to pursue their studies from sixth standard onwards in good schools.

The Government was taking steps to improve the education and social standards of tribal and dalit students.

Those who participated in the function included Chief Educational Officer Ramaraj, Sarva Shishya Abhiyan CEO Sivagnanam, Revenue Divisional Officer V. Balagurumurthy, Assistant Director (Panchayats) Prabhakaran, Adi Dravidar Welfare Officer M. Annadurai and others.
