Rally highlights rights of orphaned children

COIMBATORE: More than 3,000 youth, all college students and young professionals, swore to protect the rights of children living in orphanages and people with disabilities, at a function held here on Monday.

At the culmination of a rally taken out by them from V.K.K. Menon Road to V.O.C. Park, they pledged their dedication to the cause of the people who have been denied fundamental rights.

Organised by Youth Helping Hands (YHH), a network of young people working for the welfare of children living in orphanages, the rally witnessed an overwhelming response from the student community. About 60 people with disabilities from Caliber Trust, an organisation that worked for people with physical disabilities and 60 children from orphanages too were part of the rally.

“The main reason behind organising the rally was to create awareness about the plight of orphaned children and people with disabilities,” says R. Arun, president of YHH.

Voice of the Youth for a Clean Environment (VOYCE), (an association formed by YHH to spread the message of environmental preservation), stressed the importance of preserving the environment. R. Chakravarthy, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City (Crime West), K.S. Ramalingam, Dean of PSG Institute of Medical Science and Research, and Mahendra Ramdas, president, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, took part.
