COIMBATORE: An awareness programme for paramedical staff and social work students was conducted by the Amrit Centre for Special Needs recently. The aim of the programme was to create awareness among the paramedical staff about various kinds of disabilities. More than 80 people attended the programme. The Amrit Centre for Special Needs serves 78 children with mental retardation and cerebral palsy. These children are given regular special education, physiotherapy and communication training. A vocational unit - sheltered workshop also functions on the premises. An early intervention centre for 20 children in the age group of one to five years is also available at the school.
