Anti-Corruption Branch sleuths face tough resistance allegedly from Sub-Inspector Police officer and his accomplices allegedly locked up scrap dealer’s godown NEW DELHI: A Delhi police sub-inspector and a Hindi newspaper employee have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi Government for allegedly extorting Rs.97,000 from a scrap dealer. Scrap dealer Subhash Yadav lodged a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Branch alleging that he was being harassed by Sub-Inspector Praveen Vats of the Pul Prahladpur police post. Mr. Yadav recently procured a truck-load of scrap from a company for which, he claimed, he had all the relevant documents. But Sub-Inspector Vats allegedly asked him to pay his cut including the accumulated sum of his share that he had not paid for the past several months. The complainant paid Rs.20,000 thinking he would be allowed to carry on with the business, but the police officer and his accomplices allegedly locked up his godown. Meanwhile, it is alleged that Jitendra Chaturvedi, an employee with a Hindi newspaper, contacted Mr. Yadav offering to mediate between him and the police officer. Following negotiations, the complainant agreed to pay Rs.75,000. On Tuesday, the police officer took the scrap dealer to the police post where he threatened to arrest him if he did not pay up. The scrap dealer then paid Rs.60,000, and promised to pay rest of the money to Jitendra the next day. The entire episode was recorded on a hidden camera. Jitendra was allegedly accepting Rs.15,000 when he was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch on Wednesday. A simultaneous raid was mounted at the Pul Prahladpur police post to arrest the sub-inspector and his accomplice Constable Anil, who had allegedly taken Rs.2,000 from the complainant. However, the Anti-Corruption Branch sleuths faced tough resistance allegedly from Sub-Inspector Vats. The Anti-Corruption Branch then sought assistance from the area DCP who immediately sent an Assistant Commissioner of Police to intervene, following which the sub-inspector was arrested. A hunt has been launched for the accused constable.
