Viswanathan Anand feted

CHENNAI: World chess champion and Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand on Wednesday visited the headquarters of the Murugappa Group and had the opportunity to see the ‘Clive Chess Set’, an ivory masterpiece that dates back to the 18th century, the time of the East India Company.

The chess wizard learnt how the rare piece, believed to have been carved in Khagra in West Bengal between 1750 and 1790, came as a present to A.M.M. Arunachalam and the Murugappa family.

Anand said, “As India is known for its heritage wealth, my visit to Murugappa Group gives me great pleasure to witness the historic chess set. I appreciate the Murugappa family’s effort to preserve the heritage masterpiece,” he said.

Anand also had an interaction with the employees of the Murugappa group.

Later he was presented a specially designed sports bike by M.A. Alagappan, Executive Chairman of the Group.

Also present on the occasion were M.V. Murugappan, Chairman, Muragappa Chettiar Research Centre and Sridhar Ganesh, the Group’s Director (HR).

Netaji SC keeps winning

Netaji SC earned its second win in as many matches with a 1-0 effort over TNSP on Wednesday in the St Joseph’s-CFA senior division league at the Nehru stadium.

The Police team had several chances in the first session to grab the initiative but poor finishing on their part and some smart goalkeeping by K. Satish contributed to Netaji’s day.

Kanagarj and Kumaran made a game bid to put TNSP ahead. For Netaji, the big moment came in the 25th moment when a K. Kanagaraj cross from the left flank was well met by the side’s Nigerian recruit Dombia Mamadoi with a header. Goalkeeper Gunaseelan seemed to get his hands to the ball but let it slip out and the ball bounced into the cage.

In the first division, Rangoon FC and Challenger Union played out a 1-1 draw. Raj Prasath scored for Rangoon and Vigneswaran for Challengers Union.
