Shyam Sundar upsets Neelotpal

P.K. Ajith Kumar

MANGALORE: The opening day of the 46th National ‘A’ chess championship proved quite eventful at the Karnataka Bank Auditorium here on Wednesday.

Top-seeded Surya Shekhar Ganguly, looking for an unprecedented sixth title in a row, beat B. Adhiban in 40 moves of Queen’s Gambit Accepted.

Determined but...

The promising youngster from Chennai was determined to surprise the champion and sacrificed a knight for a couple of pawns, but the vastly experienced Ganguly was more than equal to the task.

M. Shyam Sundar surprised third-seeded Neelotpal Das in 39 moves of English Attack, taking advantage of a few dubious moves from the Kolkata Grandmaster.

Gopal in trouble

Meanwhile, the All India Chess Federation (AICF) is planning to take disciplinary action against G.N. Gopal of Kerala, who failed to turn up for the championship.

The AICF secretary D.V. Sundar told The Hindu that the federation was left with no option but to take action against Gopal. “We had clearly instructed him to play in the National ‘A’ championship but he has decided to play in some tournament abroad instead,” he said.

Mr. Sundar added that no player could stay out of the National ‘A’ championship without taking permission from the AICF and added “neither have we given Gopal the permission to skip the National ‘A’ or play in any tournament outside the country,” he said.

“We had also warned him that action would be taken if he didn’t play at the National ‘A’. A show cause notice will be served to him and the AICF will take action after that.”

The results (first round): M.S. Thejkumar bt P. Konguvel; S. Satyapragyan drew with K. Ratnakaran; M. Shyam Sundar bt Neelotpal Das; B. Adhiban lost to Surya Shekhar Ganguly; Parimarjan Negi drew with Sriram Jha; Akshayraj Kore lost to J. Deepan Chakravarthy; Praveen Thipsay bye.
