Mumbai wins carrom title

HYDERABAD: Mumbai won the men’s team carrom championship title with a 2-1 win over Hyderabad in the final of the 26th all-India Reserve Bank of India sports meet here on Wednesday.

The results: carrom: Team championship: Men: Final: Mumbai bt Hyderabad 2-1 (A.J. Salve bt V.S.K. Naidu 25-23, 19-21, 25-2; A.J. Salvi bt Y. Balsunder 9-23, 18-15, 22-1; Vinod Gajarmal lost to S. Raghunath 20-22, 7-20). Semifinals: Hyderabad bt Nagpur 2-1 (Naidu bt A.S. Rambahad 25-7, 5-12, 24-11; Raghunath bt H.S. Hedaoo 23-8, 25-6; Balsunder lost to Abdul Sagir 25-13, 25-10). Mumbai bt Bangalore 2-1 (Gajarmal bt P. Narayana 24-6, 23-4; H.K. Umesh lost to G. Shiva 19-21, 6-25; Salve bt N. Venkataramana 19-7, 25-3).

Women: Final: Bangalore bt Mumbai 3-0 (Malathi Ramesh bt Supriya Harsha 22-12, 25-0; Kavitha Somanchi bt Varsha Pandit 25-0, 25-0; V. Latha bt K. Shyamala 25-16, 25-22). Semifinals: Bangalore bt Kolkata 3-0 (Kavitha bt Kalyani Chakravarthy 25-0, 25-1; Latha bt Seema Dutta 25-8, 25-5; Malathi bt Kajal Bhattacharya 24-13, 21-13). Mumbai bt Chennai 3-0 (Shyamala bt S. Rajalaxmi 25-11, 25-0; Supriya bt Kannaki 18-10, 25-6; Sangeetha Chandurkar bt R. Sareetha 25-9, 25-5).

Football: Ahmedabad bt New Delhi 2-0.

AV College triumphs

AV College won the team championship in the Osmania University inter-college powerlifting championship here at the Lal Bahadur Stadium.

The results: 56 kg: 1. B. Kumar, 2. Shiva Kumar, 3. Bharath Karthik; 67.5 kg: 1. Sai Sampath, 2. Naresh Babu, 3. Md. Akram; 75 kg: 1. Prasad Rao, 2. B. Siva Kumar, 3. Y. Sachin; 82.5 kg: 1. Kapeshwarlu, 2. Vishal Babu, 3. Mustafa Ali; 90 kg: 1. N. Mukesh Goud, 2. Md. Layeeq, 3. Omaiz Khan.

Team Championship: 1. A.V. College, 2. S.D. Signodia College, 3. HRD and Bhavan’s College.

Kabaddi trials

Hyderabad District Kabaddi Association will organise selection trials to pick the teams to take part in the junior inter-district championship to be held in Adilabad from December 26 to 28.

The trials will be held at Kachiguda Junior College on December 22 and 23 from 4.00 pm. Each club should send two best players and interested may contact Phone No. 98493 82554 for further details.

Cross-country meet

Andhra Pradesh Amateur Athletic Association will organise AP State cross country championship on January 18 instead of the originally scheduled date of January 4. Entries close by January 10 and for particulars contact K. Ranga Rao, secretary of APAAA.

Vamshi Krishna hockey

The top teams of the local league will compete in the inaugural Vamshi Krishna memorial invitation hockey tournament for men commencing at the Begumpet Police Stadium from Thursday.

The teams which have confirmed participation include South Central Railway, State Bank of India, Osmania University, Nav Bharat, Youth League, Royal Club, Young Turks and Warangal District Association.

Somayya wins gold

M. Somayya brought the first gold for host East Coast Railway, while Southern Railway won two events on the second day of the all-India Railway Protection Force athletic championships at the Railway Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

The results (winners only): Men: 200m: Kishku (Eastern Railway, 23.97s); 200m hurdles: Sivan Raja (Southern, 28s); Triple jump: Kalai Selvan (Southern, 12.48m); Pole vault: H. Kalita (2.86m); Hammer throw: M. Somayya (ECR, 43.33M).

Women: Long jump: Shilpa Ukede (CR, 4.04m); Triple jump: Seema Deshwar (NR, 8.11m).
