Rs. 1. 36 crore for KMC repair work
R. Sujatha
CHENNAI: The entrance to Burns Ward at Kilpauk Hospital remains inaccessible after the November rain and the stagnant pool outside raises a stink. Bleaching powder has been sprinkled around pools of water at the pharmacy unit opposite the Diabetology department, situated behind the Burns Ward. Patients coming to the hospital throng the pharmacy, unmindful of the dangers of walking through the water.
The water on the college playground has dried up but the trench to let out rainwater from the ground is running full. “We sent our request in the end of November to the Health Department. They wanted us to draft short- and long-term plans,” said hospital dean M. Dhanapal. Though the hospital’s public works department authorities took up repair work, lack of funds is delaying the work.
The long-term plan includes building a compound wall around the 46 grounds granted to the hospital, raising the level of the playground and finding a permanent solution to inundation. “We have built stormwater drains but we need money to start the rest of the work,” Dr. Dhanapal said. “We have to depend on the support of the residents in the streets behind the college and the hospital before we can pump out water.”
A permanent mechanism to pump out water has been proposed as the level of the existing buildings, built in early 20th century, cannot be raised.
Principal Secretary, Health, V. K. Subburaj, said that “Rs. 1.36 crore has been sanctioned toward the repair work as part of rain relief work. Short-term and long-term measures have been proposed by the hospital and they will be taken up.”
