Postal services hit

Postal services were affected on Wednesday when members of National Federation of Postal Employees (NFPE) began an indefinite strike pressing for wage revision for extra departmental employees in the district.

Over 1,000 out of the 1,500 postmen, clerical staff and extra departmental employees went on strike, as part of the nation-wide agitation, said NFPE southern region secretary S. Sinraj.

The strike would have more impact on postal services if it continued, he said. Sixty per cent of the employees were on strike. However, regular work in the head post offices was not affected, official sources said.
