FRESH RESOLVE: Unauthorised structures in the city are in for trouble as the Coimbatore Corporation plans a drive to put down violation of building rules. — COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation is set to launch a fresh drive to check unauthorised constructions in the city and it looks for compliance from the public to building rules. One of the measures planned to tackle the menace is to put on its website a list of unauthorised constructions. Corporation Commissioner Anshul Mishra told presspersons here on Wednesday that the civic body would take firm action against unauthorised buildings, especially the multi-storeyed commercial complexes that had not provided parking space and compromised safety of the public. “If violations compromised on safety, we will take action under appropriate rules,” he said, when asked whether the structures would be demolished. As many as 464 buildings had been identified as unsafe and parking space was encroached by unauthorised structures in many others. “These structures can be removed,” he said. Mr. Mishra said the Corporation would put the list of buildings on its website to make people know of the rules and desist from violations. Mr. Mishra indicated of sustained action when presspersons pointed out that so far it had not gone beyond a couple of demolitions when the number of unauthorised structures was high. As for more such structures coming up, he said buildings under construction would be watched by town planning officials for any violation. The Corporation was taking a serious view of shops taking up the space marked for parking in approved building plans. “If all the buildings have parking space, half the parking problem on our roads will be solved,” he said. When pointed out that the system adopted by the Corporation had an inherent flaw of levying penalty on 100 per cent unauthorised constructions, the Commissioner said these could be demolished. There was no point in treating these as 100 per cent deviation, when the buildings were totally unauthorised. So, these could be demolished. The Commissioner said the civic body would check whether all apartments had enough parking space for the vehicles of the residents. As for the roads getting congested because of the visitors being forced to park their vehicles outside, the Corporation Commissioner said this problem would also be looked into.
