Connoisseurs to be taken along a global celluloid avenue

CHENNAI: The 10-day Chennai International Film Festival, which will screen 120 films from 35 countries, was inaugurated in the city on Wednesday.

Organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) with the support of the State government, the sixth edition of the film festival being held in the city will screen movies till December 26 at Woodlands, Woodlands Symphony theatres and South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce hall.

Inaugurating the festival, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said a grant of Rs.25 lakh has been provided this year towards the film festival.

Besides providing entertainment, films also depict the culture and traditions of a country. Such film festivals would enlighten the film connoisseurs and film makers about the latest technology used in the international cinema and those can be imbibed in the Tamil movies as well, he said. On the film festival and ICAF, he said the organisation, which was started in 1976, began hosting international film festivals since 2003. Tamil films such as ‘Anjathe,’ ‘Subramanyapuram,’ ‘Poo’ and ‘Kancheevaram’ would also be screened.

Information Minister Parithi Ilamvazhuthi said the subsidy for the quality low budget films has been increased from Rs.5 lakh to Rs. 7 lakh.

Acting Consul-General U.S. Consulate General Frederick J Kaplan highlighted the movies, including ‘Paper Clips’ to be screened as part of the festival.

Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF) chairman S.Kannan said of the Rs.40 lakh needed for hosting the film festival, the State government sanctioned Rs.25 lakh. The ICAF has hosted 25 film festivals and screened 150 films in the past one year apart from the CIFF.

CIFF’s vice-chairman S.Ve.Shekher said the students of Dr.MGR Film and Television Institute of Tamil Nadu would get to view the movies free of cost.

The films directed by Korean director Kim-Ki-Duk and French director Alain Resnais would also be screened apart from the short films made by students of L.V. Prasad TV and Film Academy.

CIFF’s artistic director E.Thangaraj said besides films from countries such as Finland, Poland and Japan, movies from Egypt would be screened for the first time.

Director of Alliance Francaise of Madras Marie Paule Serre, Information and Public Relations director A.C.Mohandoss, director of INKO Centre Rathi Jafer and also spoke. The function was followed by screening of Kazakhstan film ‘Tulpan.’
