MUMBAI: Manpreet Gony’s shoulder injury is one of the numerous problems dogging Punjab’s campaign in the concluding Ranji Trophy Elite League Group A match against Mumbai. The pace bowler got his shoulder examined and appears unlikely to figure in the four-day game starting at the Brabourne stadium on Thursday, forcing captain Pankaj Dharmani to bank on spinners Sarabjit Singh Ladda and Varun Khanna against the home team heavyweights. Mumbai’s batting will be strengthened by the inclusion of all-rounder Abhishek Nayar, whose recovery from dengue in time for the knockout phase ahead means trouble for the Punjab bowlers. Wasim Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma can take apart the best attack in first-class cricket when set, followed by experienced hand Amol Muzumdar. The home team opted to rest batsman Sahil Kukreja for the seventh round tie, along with bowlers Dhaval Kulkarni and Sairaj Bahutule. Off-spinner Ramesh Powar returns to the side, Rajesh Verma and Rahil Shaikh will operate with the new ball. Nayar’s seam bowling presents Jaffer with plenty of options to test Punjab’s batsmen. The visitor, placed fifth after six matches in the league (below Mumbai, Gujarat, Saurashtra and Delhi in that order), recorded a nine-wicket win over Hyderabad in the previous game.
