‘Create awareness on human rights’

Coimbatore: People should be first made aware of their rights only then they can assert their rights, said Director-General of Police (Prisons), R. Nataraj here on Wednesday.

Addressing the valediction of the Refresher Course on Human Rights organised by the Academic Staff College of Bharatiar University, he called upon the educated and the academia to create awareness on human rights.

Though the country produced 23 billionaires the progress and development benefited only 15 per cent of the population.

Fruits of labour should reach everyone. Education is a basic human right, he added.

Hardly 7 per cent of the student population make it to higher education. He said that the theme of the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) this year was Human Rights Learning. Referring to terrorism, Mr. Nataraj said a federal agency would augur well and through concerted and coordinated efforts extremism and terrorism could be fought effectively. Registrar of Bharatiar University K. Natarajan; Director of ASC A. Thanikodi; course coordinator A. Sethurama Subbiah spoke.
