“Confer Padma award on Tamil Isai artists”
Special Correspondent
Non-recognition of these artists will amount to insulting Tamil, says Ramadoss
CHENNAI: Artists of different forms of traditional Tamil Isai should be honoured with the Padma award by the Centre, S. Ramadoss, founder of the Pongu Tamil Pannisai Mani Mandram, said here on Wednesday.
Presiding over the Mandram’s sixth Pannisai Peruvizha, he said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should ensure that Tamil Isai artists were bestowed with honours like their counterparts, or he would raise this issue at all forums.
Every year, the Centre honoured classical musicians generously. Non-recognition of Tamil Isai artists amounted to ignoring or insulting Tamil. The Chief Minister should see to it that at least two-three artists got the award this year, he said.
Dr. Ramadoss said he wanted to conduct a nagaswaram concert by assembling all exponents under one roof. However, the non-availability of large auditoria for Tamil Isai acted as a dampener. Though there were several sabhas in the city, they gave preference to other languages. “Music can grow only with the help of the State government. The State should construct auditoria that can accommodate 100, 250, 1,000 or 2,000 people. There are Tamil Isai schools in the State, but they are yet to get their own buildings, recognition and funds,” he said.
The Mandram conferred the title ‘Pannisai Tamil Maamani’ on S. Muthu Kandasamy Desikar, who has contributed to the Tamil Isai for the past 60 years. The award consisted of a shawl, a citation and a plague of honour and cash.
K. Gnanaprakasam, retired High Court judge, said Tamil Isai artists should be supported at times of difficulty.
