Congratulations: BJP leader V. K. Malhotra, party’s state unit chief Harsh Vardhan and Congress MP Sajjan Kumar in the Capital on Wednesday. NEW DELHI: Senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra, who was the ‘chief ministerial candidate’ for the party, will now hold the post of Leader of Opposition in the House. At a meeting of the BJP Legislature Party on Wednesday, all the newly elected MLAs unanimously elected Prof. Malhotra their leader. A meeting of the newly-elected BJP MLAs was convened at the Delhi Assembly under the chairmanship of party national general secretary and observer and in-charge Thawar Chand Gehlot in which all the MLAs and organisation secretary of Delhi BJP Vijay Sharma participated. In the meeting, former Leader of Opposition Jagdish Mukshi proposed the name of Prof. Malhotra for the post of Leader of BJP Legislature and then Delhi BJP president Harsh Vardhan and all other MLAs approved of it and elected him their leader. The party said Prof. Malhotra will now hold the seat of Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly. The MLAs have also empowered him to form the BJP Vidhayak Dal. On being elected Leader of Opposition, Prof. Malhotra said he would try and fulfil all the desires of the people of Delhi and would try to play the role of a constructive Opposition in the Assembly. Asserting that he would be raising issues concerning the people both within and outside the House, Prof. Malhotra – who like the Chief Minister would also be having a “third term” in Delhi Assembly -- said while from 1967 to 1972 he was the Chief Executive Councillor of Delhi, from 1972 to 1977, he was the Leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha.
