Teachers body’s silence on pay scale surprises many

As the Central Government made an announcement on revising the pay scales of university and college teachers, the Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Associations decided to call off its strike that it had launched early this week.

However, not all Delhi University teachers are happy with the decision.

The National Democratic Teachers’ Front has expressed its concern over “the way” the FEDCUTA strike was called off.

Manoj Khanna, the NDTF candidate for Executive Council, elections for which will be held on Friday, expressed surprise as to why the FEDCUTA or the Delhi University Teachers’ Association had not said anything against the “negative features” of the announced pay structure.

“Why was the DUTA Executive meeting not convened to take a decision on the suspension of the strike? How come only the DUTA office bearers met and took this decision. When our main demands have not been met, what’s the point in calling off the strike?” he asked.

However, DUTA president Aditya Narayan Misra said: “As per the resolution adopted by the DUTA General Body, it was decided that the strike will continue until the announcement on pay revision was made. So, we suspended the strike when the Centre took a decision.”

“The moment we get a notification from the Government on pay scales, we will convene a meeting of the DUTA Executive to discuss future course of action,” he assured.

The valedictory address was delivered by author and consultant Gurcharan Das, who shared his insights on leadership.
