Security up at railway stations

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Railway Police intensified security checks at major railway stations in the State on Tuesday following a threat message.

According to police sources, the State intelligence received a short messaging service (SMS) that warned of blasts in Chennai Egmore, Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore and Tambaram railway stations.

“We have taken adequate precautionary measures. Anti-sabotage checks are being done at vulnerable areas. Firm action will be taken against those sending hoax messages,” Inspector-General of Police (Railways) G.U.G. Shastry said.

Sources in Southern Railway said empty rakes were being screened before being brought to platforms.
