TAMBARAM: Calling for greater collaboration between universities and hospitals, Vishwa Mohan Katoch, Secretary, Department of Health Research, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research, said there was no dearth of funds to conduct research.

He was speaking at the inauguration of APCON 2008 – International Academy of Pathology’s Indian Division’s annual conference and the 57th annual conference of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists at SRM University in Kattankulathur on Monday.

He pointed out that abroad, universities and hospitals did not function as two separate institutions. The universities there acted as the driving force behind hospitals in providing patient care. Turning his attention to the medical fraternity, he said: “You should perform your tasks with love, otherwise, there is no difference between you and a lab technician,” Dr. Katoch remarked.

Making it clear that doctors should continue to research and innovate so that people received high quality medical treatment at affordable costs, he said there was no dearth of funds in India to invest on science, Dr. Katoch said.

Private organisations and educational institutions were only too glad to come forward and fund research activities, provided they showed results, he said.

Later responding to questions from presspersons, one on fleecing by corporate hospitals and private labs for conducting pathology tests, he replied that health was a State subject and the Centre could only perform the role of an adviser.

However, the Centre would send guidelines to be followed to bring in regulations.

The ICMR’s activities encompassed every health research activity from research stage to the application stage, Dr. Katoch said.

Harsh Mohan, president of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists, and T. R. Pachamuthu, Chancellor, SRM University, spoke.

In his address, P. Sathyanarayanan, Vice-Chancellor of the university, said two students of medicine from the university would be visiting the Harvard Medical School for a three-month clinical rotation programme.
