AIADMK asks Speaker to disqualify Selvam
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Tuesday petitioned Speaker R. Avudaiappan seeking disqualification of legislator K. Selvam (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi), representing the Mangalore constituency, on the ground of defection from the VCK to the Bahujan Samaj Party.
A petition submitted by M. Thambidurai, AIADMK (Bargur constituency), quoted constitutional provisions and stated that Mr. Selvam stood disqualified as he had voluntarily given up his membership of the VCK and joined the BSP.
Citing news reports, the petition stated that Mr. Selvam had been given the membership card of the BSP and appointed president of its State unit.
He was an elected member of a registered, unrecognised party and had joined a national party recognised by the Election Commission.
Several rulings of the Supreme Court and various High Courts had held that media reports, news items and interviews were material evidence admissible for proceedings under the Tenth Schedule, Mr. Thambidurai said.
“No denial”
Mr. Selvam had not denied his statements or press reports on quitting the VCK and joining the BSP.
