Srinagar/Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir will vote on Wednesday in the sixth and penultimate phase of the Assembly elections that have seen mass participation despite boycott calls by separatists.

This round will decide the fate of the former Chief Ministers, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Ghulam Nabi Azad.

The elections will be held in 16 constituencies in five districts – 10 in Anantnag and Kulgam in the Kashmir Valley, and six in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban in the Jammu region.

While Mr. Sayeed of the People’s Democratic Party is fighting from Anantnag, Mr. Azad of the Congress is seeking re-election from Bhaderwah in Doda district.

The main contest in south Kashmir is between the National Conference and the PDP, though the Congress, the Panthers Party, the Samajwadi Party, the Lok Jan Shakti Party, the Awami National Conference, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Communist Party of India(Marxist), besides independents, are also in the race.

In Noorabad in Kulgam, the former Minister and PDP leader Abdul Aziz Zargar is seeking re-election. Sakina Itoo of the NC is posing a serious challenge to his bid to stage a comeback from the constituency.

Seeking re-election in Kulgam is Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami, CPI(M) State general secretary. His main rivals are Safdar Ali Khan of the NC and Nazir Ahmad Laway of the PDP.

In Homeshalibugh in Anantnag district, the PDP’s Abdul Gaffar Sofi is seeking re-election, against Abdul Majeed of the NC and Anayatullah Rather (Congress). In the Anantnag constituency, Mr. Sayeed is challenging Mirza Mehboob Beigh, NC provincial president who is seeking re-election. – IANS
