Agitators lathicharged

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: Police lathicharged agitators in front of a private B.Ed college at Pulichapallam in Vanur block near here on Tuesday.

Late in the evening, the police arrested about 60 persons on charges of unlawful assembly. Tension prevailed in the area when college principal Arokkiaraj reprimanded certain students for their questionable behaviour on the college premises.

Taking objections to his remarks, members of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi assembled at the college to express solidarity with the students.

The police arrived on the scene and told the agitators to disperse. When it fell on deaf ears, the police wielded lathis to chase them away. Later, the police, led by Superintendent of Police A.Amalraj, reached the spot and arrested about 60 persons.
