Pilot project to be launched in Karur

Staff Reporter

KARUR: A pilot project “100 days literacy scheme for girls” would soon be in place in all the eight panchayat unions in Karur district, District Collector J. Umamaheswari has said.

Speaking at a sensitizing workshop for officials involved in the project here on Tuesday, Dr. Umamaheswari said it was essential that girls and women were enlightened and literate enough for a society to progress. Women’s development held the key to societal development. The literacy gap between women and men was wide according to surveys.

The novel scheme would envisage education and life skill orientation for the women. Women should develop a taste for general knowledge as that would stand them in good stead, she added. Women and girls should learn to read, write and speak and only then their innate talents would shine forth. Development should be even and not one-sided and for that, women and girls should be educated, the Collector observed.

As for the scheme, initially as an experimental initiative it would be implemented in eight centers in as many panchayat unions in the district. She advised the officials to tour the identified villages from four to six in the evening, identify the illiterates and teach them in a manner that in a period of 100 days they were able to more than just sign their names.

Chief Education Officer Kandasamy, District Education Officer Ramasamy, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan Zonal Resources Centre trainer Raghu Kalam and Continuing Education District Coordinator Palansiamy participated.
