Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has sanctioned Rs.20 crore interim relief to the Puducherry government for carrying out relief and rehabilitation measures in the flood-affected areas in Puducherry and Karaikal districts.
He conveyed this to a delegation from Puducherry, led by Chief Minister V. Vaithilingam, which called on him here on Tuesday.
The delegation, comprising five Puducherry Ministers, 14 MLAs, Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs V. Narayanasamy and Lok Sabha member M. Ramadoss, told Dr. Singh that heavy rain caused by cyclone Nisha and floods had damaged the power infrastructure, huts and houses. They also caused breaches in tanks and river banks. About 4.5 lakh people were affected and 1.60 lakh persons given shelter in 94 relief camps in Puducherry district and 42 in Karaikal district. They also wanted the Prime Minister to provide funds for the completion of work on the Rs.857-crore government medical college in Puducherry, to be named after K. Kamaraj.
The delegation later called on Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Health Minister R. Anbumani.
