Lending a sympathetic ear to the distressed

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Got four hours to spare in a week? Then perhaps you have got an opportunity to save a fellow human being from the depths of despair back to life.

Maithri, a non-government organisation working for suicide prevention in Kerala, is in the lookout for volunteers in the district.

Interested persons can attend a session to be held at ICTA Santhigram, near Pathadippalam, Kalamassery, on December 20 at 3 p.m.

The objectives of the organisation and the nature of service expected of the newly recruited volunteers would be discussed at the meeting.

“Voluntary support and its importance is more or less understood by the country today and Maithri works purely with the strong backing of its volunteers. The holistic progress of the organisation and the realisation of its vision of suicide-eradication is entirely due to its volunteer-support”, said Rajesh R. Pillai, director of Maithri.

A successful volunteer is one who identifies a person with suicide tendency from the apparent cues and who then builds a rapport with the distressed person.

Maithri trains its volunteers to listen actively with an open mind, and more importantly, without being judgmental, Mr. Pillai said.

Being a compassionate listener is part of being a fully trained Maithri volunteer, he said.

Interested persons may contact the office of Maithri at 0484-2540530 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
