CHALAKUDY: When she first tried out the pole-vault some three years ago, Juby Paily had a fear of heights. And since the Kannur Sports Division, where she trained, had some quality pole-vaulters, the young girl from Sultan Bathery was under much pressure. “But Sini chechi, who held the schools record, helped me overcome the problem. She taught me how to hold the pole and the right technique,” said the 16-year-old. Juby broke the three-year-old junior girls’ record of her school-mate Sini Jose at the 52nd Kerala State schools athletics championship here on Monday evening. She was thrilled for it was her first State meet of any kind. “Getting the gold and the State record in my first State schools meet…can I ask for anything more?” said Juby, who is coached by Ajay Raj, after going over 2.70m, four centimetres higher than the record. In two mindsWhile Juby was happy with her record, another Sports Division athlete Arun S. Kumar of SAI-LNCPE (Thiruvananthapuram) was confused despite coming came close to breaking the National schools record in the senior boys high jump. Arun, who is coached by Satyendran — a top-class decathlete in his heyday and the brother of Asian long jump champion Suresh Babu — is not sure of whether he should continue with the high jump or concentrate on multi-eventers. “I’ve been winning junior National golds in octathlon and now I want to take up the decathlon seriously,” said the 18-year-old after a 2.03-metre effort which broke the State record by one centimetre. He missed equalling the national mark by another painful centimetre. Another quality record came from the fast-improving hurdler M.S. Darsana who is coached by P.T. Usha at her School of Athletics. Darsana broke a year-old sprint hurdles record in the senior girls section. Eight records showed up on Monday, with four coming from sports division athletes. Kottayam’s Dileep Venugopal (senior boys 110 m hurdles, 15.11 secs), Palakkad’s M.D. Thara (senior girls 5,000m) and 80m hurdler P. Merlin (sub-junior girls, 12.67s), Kannur Sports Division’s 400m runner C. S. Sindhyamol (56.21s) and Vellayani SAMGMRSS’s sub-junior discus thrower K. Aneesh (42.54m) accounted for the other marks.
