HEALTHY INITIATIVE: Mayor M.Subramanian distributes awareness pamphlets on AIDS and sexually-transmitted diseases at the Government Dental College and Hospital in Chennai on Monday

Chennai: A programme to promote awareness of AIDS and identification of its symptoms among patients was organised for doctors, medical students and nurses at the Government Dental College and Hospital on Monday.

Mayor M. Subramanian inaugurated the programme conducted in association with the Chennai Corporation AIDS Prevention and Control Society (CAPACS). He released a booklet on AIDS and distributed pamphlets on the prevention of sexually-transmitted diseases. Senior doctors held interactive discussions with students on oral symptoms such as ulcers and tongue sores in HIV-infected patients.

The Mayor commended the hospital for the dental health screening programmes it conducted in Chennai Corporation schools. About 37,500 students have been screened this year, he said. The hospital’s medical team also screened about 800 patients at the health camps recently conducted by the civic body.

Government Dental College Dean K.S. Nasser and Head of the Oral Medicine Department S. Jayachandran spoke on the occasion.
