CHENNAI: An ambulance belonging to a private hospital was gutted after it caught fire on the Saidapet bridge here on Monday.

However, nobody was injured in the accident as the driver and his assistant moved to safety.

Police said the ambulance was proceeding towards Adambakkam to bring a patient who was reported sick. The driver, S. Sampath (24), noticed thick smoke coming out of the speeding vehicle and stopped it on the bridge.

Even before he could throw sand and water to put out the billowing smoke, the vehicle went up in flames.

Fire tenders were rushed to the scene that extinguished the fire within minutes. Traffic was disrupted for sometime in the area following the incident.

The cause of fire is under investigation.
