CHENNAI: The Commissioners of Chennai Corporation and Alandur Municipality on Monday filed affidavits tendering unconditional apology to the Madras High Court in a matter relating to the alleged burning of garbage at the Perungudi landfill site. During the last hearing, the court had ordered issue of notice to the two officials to showcause why contempt of court proceedings should not be initiated against them for violating court orders with regard to stoppage of burning of waste at the landfill. When the matter came up before the First Bench comprising Chief Justice A.K.Ganguly and Justice K.Chandru, Chennai Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni in his affidavit said now the burning of waste was totally stopped and rag-pickers totally driven away from the dump site. Security personnel had been posted at the site round the clock and hence burning of garbage and smoke were not prevalent there. The Corporation was constructing a compound wall to prevent entry of unauthorised persons, including rag-pickers. High mast lights had been provided. In his affidavit, Alandur Municipality Commissioner R.Mohan submitted that police had been requested to take action against miscreants who tried to set fire to the garbage at the dumping yard. Sanitary inspectors had been posted. A water tanker had been permanently stationed at the dumping yard. Work on constructing a landfill at Venkatamangalam near Tambaram was in the stage of tender evaluation.
