Honoured with Guru Surajananda award

CHENNAI: In prisons across the State the day begins with patriotic songs being played for the benefit of prisoners. In the evenings too, devotional songs are played to enable them cope with the stress and disappointment of not being released, said R. Natraj, Director General of Police (Prisons).
Giving away awards at a function organised here recently by Sruthilaya Kendra and Sruthilaya Kendra Natarajaalaya, Mr. Natraj said this to highlight the importance of music in helping people maintaining harmony in life. On the occasion, Mr. Nataraj presented the ‘Gowri Manohari’ award to Harikatha exponent ‘Nagai’ Mukundan.
R. Rajagopal, vice-president of Karthik Fine Arts, was conferred the ‘Guru Surajananda’ award by Madras High Court judge R.Sudhakar.
The award was presented to Mr. Rajagopal for his service to the field of drama, dance and music, said Karaikudi Mani, founder of the Kendra.
The Venkatanarasimhan endowment prize and the Nathan endowment prize were also presented. R. Sekar, secretary of Karthik Fine Arts, Mr.Mukundan and the Kendra’s director Rajeswari Sainath, spoke.
