The agriculture-based villages like Mangudi, Marudhavanan and Exhiloor in Muthupettai block in Tiruvarur district are the worst hit in the recent cyclone. Water-logging continues in these villages even after 20 days. Water from the paddy fields is receding slowly, owing to improper drainage. The drainage channels have not been desilted during the summer and this was the main reason for the water-logging for long . The farmers are not expected to get any return in the samba season. I request the PWD and Agriculture Department to solve the problem on a long-term basis. Only a long term plan will bring solace to the farmers who face the flooding of paddy fields during every monsoon. P.V. Nadimuthu, Mangudi, Tiruvarur district. Restore number of coachesThe coaches of Karur-Tiruchi passenger train is reduced from 8 to 6. It causes difficulty for students and passengers to travel. In this regard, when I tried to contact the Salem DRM office number -0427 2449957, but the answer was “the number is not in use.” Please increase the coaches at the earliest. S. Prakash, Mutharasanallur. Health of students at stakeI had been to the East Gate Branch of the St. Peter’s Higher Secondary School in Thanjavur to attend a function recently after 50 years. I found to my surprise that very close to the main front entrance gate a public toilet has been constructed a few years ago by the municipality, despite protests by the school authorities. There is also an old cement water tank by the side of this toilet for providing drinking water for the cattle. It is obvious that the health of hundreds of boys and girls who study here and the cattle is at stake.
J. Eden Alexander, Thanjavur. Reduce age limit for enhanced pension Fare concession is given to senior citizens from the age of 70 in railways. But the Pay Commission has recommended enhanced pension from the age of 80 only. I request the central Government to modify it and reduce the age limit to 70, so that many will be financially benefited during their last spell of life. K. Santhanam, Kumbakonam. Rallies choke trafficRallies are the order of the day. Under one pretext or the other, a rally is organised locking arterial roads paralysing traffic and pedestrian movement. The aggrieved are either a political party or a group of farmers or textile workers etc. Quite often we witness hundreds of people protesting against power cuts in different places. Granted, protest / rally is a democratic form of resentment against any government, agency or department. But the place and timing of such rallies make the difference. If any rally takes place during public holidays or any day off peak hours, normal life will be less affected; students and office-goers will then heave a sigh of relief. Vengarai S. Raman, Thanjavur. Alert people on forecast warningIt is a matter of grave concern that there have occurred many an incident of deaths, owing to wall collapse in the recent rain in delta districts. It shows that there are yet families of abject poverty lacking in a safe dwelling. People are so indifferent to discard the weather forecasts. The VAOs and heads of local bodies should alert the people to avoid such tragedies through public announcements. G. Vedarajan, Thanjavur. Operate leak-proof busesThe people travelling in town and mofussil buses run by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation have to face difficulties during the rainy reason. This is because of rainwater leakage in buses. The rainwater comes inside the buses from tar-coated wooden roof, the closed windows and the plywood floor. As a result, commuters get affected in many ways. Meanwhile, perhaps no water leakage could be found in private buses. In some buses, the wiper malfunctions. The authorities of the TNSTC may ply leak-proof buses. A. Haja Abdul Khader, Adirampattinam.
