TIRUVARUR: The Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan has alleged that Communists are trying to “mislead” people that relief was not provided to them properly in the flood-affected areas of Tiruvarur district. Referring to a half naked march from Muthupettai to Tiruvarur announced by the All India Youth Federation (AIYF) affiliated to the Communist Party of India (CPI) on December 18 in the district, demanding flood relief, the Minister said that the Government had taken all efforts to mitigate the sufferings of people affected by floods. In a statement issued at Tiruvarur on Monday, the Minister said that the district received 5699.1 mm of rainfall in November. It resulted in heavy devastation. Paddy crop on 1.34 lakh hectares was damaged. Breaches occurred at various places on river banks and roads and traffic was affected in 20 places. The loss was to the tune of Rs.700 crore. A total of 573 revenue villages was affected. The Government swung into action and organised 951 relief camps in which 6,54,356 persons stayed and were fed. Forty persons died in the district, owing to rain to whose relatives a sum of Rs. 80 lakh was paid as solatium. A total of 834 cattle were lost for which a sum of Rs.26.34 lakh was disbursed as compensation. About 1.35 lakh dhoties and 1.35 lakh saris were distributed. Nearly one lakh text books were distributed to students from sixth to eighth standard and another 50,000 books to plus one and plus two students. Relief is to be paid at the rate of Rs.7,500 per hectare for paddy damage. Ministers M. K. Stalin, K. N. Nehru visited the district. Central team also visited the district. Even now people are staying in 180 camps and fed. “When all these measures have been taken, it is unfortunate the AIYF has announced this agitation. If they have really concern for people’s welfare they should withdraw the agitation and highlight the Government’s service to them. I appeal to them to withdraw the agitation,” he said in the statement.
