All Government schools in the State enforce khaki pants and white shirts for boys and blue chudithar and white tops for girls. When private and aided schools opt for attractive uniforms it is good to change the uniforms in Government schools too in line with the changing time. So blue pants and white shirts for boys and green chudhithar and white tops for girls may be opted. This uniform will not only be nice but will also enthuse the students. The students need not develop complexes when they come across private and aided school students. Hence steps may be taken to adopt the new uniform from the ensuing academic year itself. V.Kumar, Thekkurichy, Kanyakumari District. Inconvenient bus seatsIn certain private mofussil buses operating between Tuticorin and Tiruchendur, the length of the two/three seaters is found to be comparatively shorter than those provided in the State-owned buses. This causes inconvenience to passengers. When enquired with a private bus conductor, he said that this is to create extra space in the middle-path so that more standing passengers could be accommodated. I request the authorities concerned to ensure while issuing permit that the two/three seaters in buses are with the same length as fixed by the government. D. Edwin Alexander, Tuticorin. Illegal sand miningThere is a spurt in illegal sand mining and exploitation of river sand in districts of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin. According to Madras High Court order issued on July 15, 1999, the river management committees or action panels should be set up to ensure a free and fair sand mining; permanent markers should be fixed in the river bed and sand mining stopped wherever necessary. Such action will not only safeguard the ecology but also prevent floods. But, no such rules are being followed. There are daily reports of illegal and over sand mining taking place in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli districts. The lethargic attitude of the local officials concerned is the root cause of this menace. I request the Collectors of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin to look into the matter immediately and take steps to ensure a fair and free sand mining. And also, severe action should be taken against those involved in illegal sand mining. P. Senthil Saravana Durai, Vazhavallan, Tuticorin District. Age restriction must goBefore it is too late the democratic heads of our country must meet and devise ways and means to find a solution to the problems of educated unemployed youths. Crores of people are on the rolls of employment exchange for decades expecting employment. But it is lamentable to note that age restriction is being imposed for appointments. The situation prevalent throughout the country warrants age restriction for appointments to be done away with immediate effect. K. Chellia Aundivillai. Railway e-ticket and students’ problemsIt has been reported that students making railway journeys with e-tickets have been penalised for not carrying with them the prescribed identity cards. Students can not be expected to have PAN cards, driving license, passport, ration cards and the like as prescribed by the Railways as they are only in their threshold of life. It is better that the authorities include the identity cards issued by the heads of the educational institutions as one of the valid documents for proof of identification for railway journeys on e-ticket. Further the TTEs insist on the production of original identity cards and they do not accept the photostat copies instead. In case the ID cards are lost in transit, as every body knows, it will be a herculean task to obtain duplicates of such valuable documents. Therefore it is requested that the railways authorities issue suitable instructions to the ticket examiners to accept the photostat copies of the identity cards also while travelling on e-tickets. S. Nallasivan Tirunelveli. Side middle berthRecently, while travelling from Madurai to Bangalore in the Tuticorin–Mysore Express I was e “re-allotted” a side middle berth, an innovation of the Southern Railway to increase income. I had great difficulty in accommodating myself in the side middle berth. The side upper berth has a very low roof and the lower one a painful one. The middle is uneven and tests your back. Under this innovative move, the passengers could neither sit not stretch comfortably though they pay the same charges. The Railway should go in for a side middle berth only after introducing specially designed coaches. G.K.S. Kandasubramanian, Sivaganga.
