ground breaking: The bhoomi puja for the construction the government medical college was performed at Mundiambakkam near Villupuram in the presence of Collector R.Palanisamy (second from right),on Monday. VILLUPURAM: Bhoomi puja was performed for the construction of the Rs 99-crore government medical college and hospital at Mundiambakkam near here on Monday. Those present on the occasion included District Collector R.Palanisamy, Principal Vamsadhara, S.Pushparaj, MLA, and District Revenue Officer C.Kadhiravan. Later, the Collector told presspersons that for speedy completion of the construction works two contractors had been assigned the task. While one contractor would take up works on the 500-bed four-storied hospital buildings on 25,694 sq.metre area at a cost of Rs 32.41 crore, another contractor would build an out-patient ward with a blood bank on 4,951 sq.metre space at a cost of Rs 8.15 crore. In the second phase classrooms, an administrative building, an auditorium, hostels and quarters for doctors and nurses would be built at a cost of Rs 58.70 crore. Mr Palanisamy said the medical college that would enrol 100 students was likely to commence the courses in the next academic year. In fact, the government had passed an order on August 20, 2006 for setting up the medical college for which Local Administration Minister M.K.Stalin had laid the foundation stone on May 19, 2007. However, a court stay was obtained by certain organisations against the setting up of the medical college at Mundiambakkam. With the consistent efforts taken by Higher Education Minister K.Ponmudy the stay was vacated and the construction works begun today. The buildings would be ready for occupation within 17 months, the Collector added.
