Police official clarifies
With reference to an article “Security measures dampen festive spirit” (page 3, Tamil Nadu Edition, December 13, 2008), Superintendent of Police, Tiruvannamalai District, V. Balakrishnan clarifies: it is true that a few people could not enter the temple and indulged in argument with the police for the following reasons — many of them brought passes belonging to the previous year; many devotees were either carrying duplicate passes or tried to enter in the guise of officers on duty; only limited number of people were allowed inside the temple, as the space was highly inelastic and to avoid stampede; the gates were not closed at 2.30 p.m.; many devotees with passes were not allowed inside, considering the safety and security concerns of the people, who had already entered the temple by standing in the queue in advance.
Mr. Balakrishnan said that they had deployed 1,547 men and officers to streamline the vehicle movement.
