Ready to conduct media seminar: Karunanidhi

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi on Sunday said that the State Government was ready to conduct a media seminar in Chennai as requested by the Press Council of India.

In a meeting with the members of the Press Council of India headed by G.N.Ray, the Chief Minister said that the general public also should be allowed to participate in the seminar to express their views about the media.

Mr.Karunanidhi also recalled his letter to Justice Ray in October explaining the steps taken by the government against those who attacked The Hindu vendors in a few places in the State.

The Chief Minister said that the pension for the journalists had been hiked to Rs.4,000 per month from Rs.1000 in 2006.

Thanking the Chief Minister for his willingness to conduct the seminar and appreciating the measures taken by the government for the welfare of the journalists, Justice Ray expressed hope that other states would follow Tamil Nadu.

About the steps taken by the State Government to address the problems faced by The Hindu, Justice Ray said it went to show its interest in protecting the freedom of the media.

The Inquiry Committee of the Press Council of India would meet in Chennai on December 15 and 16 to consider 36 complaints from the Southern States.

According to a press release, the meeting will be held under the Chairmanship of G.N. Ray in Chennai in the conference hall, Singaravelar Maaligai, Chennai Collectorate Building.

The hearing is open to press and the public.
