Call for stringent laws to check eve-teasing

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Stree Vimukthi Sangathana, a local voluntary organisation working for the cause of the fair sex, has condemned the acid attack on college girls Swapnika and her friend Praneetha by a youth in Warangal district.

In a statement on Sunday, its convener T. Sridevi blamed the authorities concerned for what she called their “clear lack of inefficiency in containing the increasing violence against the fair sex.”

Stating that killing of the accused persons in an “encounter” by the police was not a solution to the deep-rooted problem, she said it was unfortunate that those directly dealing with such cases had failed to grasp the crux of the matter.

TV serials

The need of the hour was to put in place stringent laws to curb social evils like ragging and eve-teasing. Programmes telecast by television channels glorifying atrocities against women must be immediately stopped and a relentless war against perpetrators of such mindless violence must be declared. Ms. Sridevi said the series of incidents targeting girls in colleges, hostels and streets had made it impossible for women to move freely without any fear. Films and television serials projecting the positive emotion of “love” in a distorted way were sending wrong signals among the youth. Girls were being harassed, humiliated, tortured and killed in the name of ‘love’. Girls being stalked, attacked and killed in cold-blood had become commonplace, she regretted.

She said it was time the authorities concernedinitiated effective measures to bring the culpritsto book.
