JOINING HANDS: College students participating in a human chain in Chennai on Sunday. CHENNAI: “Hate terror, love peace,” was the message that dozens of youngsters sought to drive home during a human chain that they formed in the city on Sunday. The human chain, an initiative of Peace Rangers of Loyola College, was organised to promote peace and express solidarity with the victims of the Mumbai terror attacks. “I condemn the terror attacks in Mumbai and my heart goes out to all the victims of the attacks,” said Karthi P. Chidambaram, All India Congress Committee member, who addressed the gathering of students upon the culmination of the human chain. Though terror was not new to India, the fact that the terrorists had targeted the upper strata of society was a first, he said. A pledge was taken by the gathering, which consisted of over 100 students from Loyola, Women’s Christian, MOP Vaishnav and Stella Maris colleges, rejecting terror and embracing peace as part of the ‘Season of Love’ peace campaign. The chain from Loyola to Ispahani Centre in Nungambakkam had students of other colleges joining mid-way. “Given the background of these terrorists who are young and brainwashed into thinking that they are doing good, creating awareness among people is paramount,” said Vaishnavi Kumar, a student of MOP Vaishnav College, applauding the effort. “Such campaigns should be held regularly and not just when there is a terror attack,” said Nikhil, a student of Loyola College. White and red balloons were released into the sky on the conclusion of the pledge.
