It’s precious: A diamond ring worth Rs.1.5 crores and bangles worth Rs. 50 lakhs being displayed at the Vijayawada Gold and Diamond Jewellery Fair-2008 on Sunday. —

VIJAYAWADA: The sparkling piece of a three-carat finger ring worth Rs. 1.5 crores was the cynosure of all eyes. “The specialty of this piece is it’s De-colour and IF (Internally Flawless) feature. It is a rarity to find a D-IF piece,” explained Pratik Kothari, managing director of Kothari Jewellers.

“People here understand and appreciate the quality of jewellery, as we satisfy all the four ‘C’s (cut, colour, clarity and carat) of diamond jewellery,” he said.

A veil of shimmer and shine enveloped Seshasai Kalyana Vedika, where the fifth Vijayawada Gold and Diamond Jewellery Fair unfolded on Sunday. The rare glitter spread out by the three-day event has reputable jewellers, both manufacturers and retailers, from places like Jaipur, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Hyderabad showcasing their latest designs.

Om Prakash Goel of Hyderabad-based Suraj Bhan Jewellers has introduced a dazzling fancy rainbow colour peacock ‘vaddanam’ (waist belt).

“This is a latest design and you will not find it in any of the local shops here,” he said, explaining how more and more people were buying diamonds now due to the affordability factor. “There is a great demand for uncut diamonds (ravva chakkalu), the price of which are far less than diamonds,” explained Neeraj Goel, Om Prakash’s son.

Sushmita Gupta of New Delhi-based ‘Shrians’ found it slightly difficult to cater to a whole lot of customers at one go. Chunky jewellery in precious and semi-precious stones offered at her stall had women with an eye for latest trends queuing up. Sushmita’s son Priyank Gupta came to her rescue.

“We mix a lot of different colours and fuse various stones for a novel look,” he said, showing a fabulous pendant.

Mahaveer Bothra of Chennai-based White Fire felt that a higher purchasing capacity was allowing a larger chunk of the society to splurge on jewellery. “Diamond ear studs are in great demand as women find their shimmer almost irresistible,” he smiled.

Light weight jewellery

Raj Shree Jewellers, also from Chennai, had a specialty in lightweight diamond jewellery. “People of this city are well aware of the changing trends. Nose studs and second studs for ears are fast moving pieces,” he said. Besides, there were stalls put up by Hyderabad-based Srinidhi Pearls. “This is my first visit to this city.

On the first day of this expo, I have already decided that I will regularly participate henceforth,” said Ajay Kumar, happily pointing to his unusually crowded stall.

The event would remain open from 10.30 a.m. to 8 p.m. on the subsequent days.
