TIRUCHI: The Human Rights Day was observed at the Central Prison and the Special Prison for Women here recently by organising competitions for the male and female prisoners on the topic humanism. The Superintendent of Prisons, Central Prison A. Murugesan administered the International Human Rights pledge to the inmates lodged in Central Prison and the Special Prison for Women. The programme featured elocution, poetry and essay writing competitions which were conducted separately for male and female prisoners in their respective jails. The history behind the observance of Human Rights Day was explained to the inmates on the occasion. A message from the DGP (Prisons) R. Natraj prepared in connection with the Human Rights Day was read out to the inmates on the occasion. The Director, Centre for Human Studies, Bharathidasan University N. Manimekalai and A. Thandeeswaran, Lecturer, St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchi spoke on the importance of human rights and about the fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution. Law was equal for all and every person had the right to seek legal assistance, the speakers said. Mr. Murugesan, who is in charge of the Special Prison for Women distributed prizes to the inmates who emerged winners in various competitions. Among the winners was a prisoner who is facing death penalty. The Jailor B. Ilavarasan and other Prisons Department personnel participated in the programme, a release here said.
