Naga Sampath, Toshali triumph

VIJAYAWADA: Vizag’s Naga Sampath and Toshali emerged winners in the Andhra Pradesh under-7 chess championship in the boys’ and girls’ segments by logging in 4.5 and four points respectively out of five rounds at Tanuku (WG District) on Sunday.

Vizag’s Jeyesh Kumar and Vijayawada’s Sanjana took the second places in their respective segments.

These four players will represent Andhra Pradesh in the National under-7 championship to be held in Nagpur from December 31 to January 7, 2009.

Reshma wins

Nellore’s N. Reshma Reddy defeated Vizag’s Ch. Amulya 9-25, 25-0, 25-8 to win the cadet girls’ title in the 37th sub-junior inter-district carrom championship at the LVR & Sons Club at Guntur on Sunday.

In the cadet boys’ section, Vizag’s Sai Uday and Nellore’s Ch. Naveen entered the final defeating Guntur’s T. Surya and B. Koteswara Rao in the semifinals.

The results: Cadet Boys: Semifinals: Sai Uday (Vskp) bt T. Surya (Gnt) 25-0, 25-0; Ch. Naveen (Nlr) bt B. Koteswara Rao (Gtr) 25-6, 25-9.

Cadet girls: Final: N. Reshma Reddy (Nlr) bt Ch. Amulya (Vzg) 9-25, 25-0, 25-8; Semifinals: N. Reshma Reddy (Nlr) bt P. Renuka (Gtr) 25-7, 25-10, Ch. Amulya (Vzg) bt R. Alekhya (Nlr) 25-5, 10-25, 25-7.

Sub-junior girls: Quarterfinals: MSK Harika (Vzg) bt Y. Priyanka (Vzg) 25-0, 25-2; L. Sandhya (Gtr) bt P. Vineela (Nlr) 25-0, 25-0; A. Bhavani (Vzg) bt Sk. Neha (Nlr) 25-3, 25-0; N. Rajya Lakshmi (Gtr) bt Indraja (Nlr) 25-0, 25-0.

Narrow win for VRSEC

V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College (VRSEC) defeated Government Degree College, Chebrolu, 23-22 in the knock-out fixtures of the Acharya Nagarjuna University softball tournament for men, here on Sunday.

The results: Avanigadda GC bt Kandukuru GC 20-10; P.B.N College (Nidubrolu) bt Rajiv Gandhi DC (Hanuman Junction) 15-3; MVR DC (Battibrolu) bt ALC 17-1; SRR & CVR bt P.B. Siddhartha 10-0; VRSEC bt Chebrolu DC 23-22.

Selection trials

Trials to select the ACA Central Zone under-25 team will be held at the Loyola Public School grounds at Guntur on December 21.
