HAVERI: Sri Shivabasava Swamiji, seer of Hukkeri Math in Haveri and Madana Hipparagi Math in Aland taluk of Gulbarga district passed away on Saturday. He was 92. The swamiji, who had a huge following in north Karnataka region, was a proponent of “Basava philosophy” and was instrumental in setting up more than 14 educational institutions. According to a release issued by the Hukkeri Math, the swamiji who had been admitted to KLE Hospital in Belgaum for hernia surgery, suffered a heart attack after a successful surgery on Saturday evening and didn’t recover. Thousands of people from various places in the district and neighbouring districts visited Hukkeri Math on Sunday to pay their last respects to the seer, after the mortal remains were brought to Haveri from Belgaum on Sunday morning. In order to allow the people to pay their respects, it was decided to keep the mortal remains of the seer at the math for a day. The funeral of the swamiji would be held at the math at noon on Monday.
