Good start: High Court Judges Justice S.K. Krishnan (third left) and Justice R. Banumathy (second left) after unveiling the plaque of subordinate court in Harur on Sunday. HARUR (DHARMAPURI): Lawyers should serve society with social consciousness, Madras High Court Judge Justice S.K. Krishnan has said. Inaugurating a sub-court in Harur on Sunday, Mr. Krishnan, who is also the portfolio Judge in-charge for Dharmapuri district, urged the young lawyers to uphold the dignity of the Constitution of India. They should not take law in their hands. They should dedicate themselves to the cause of the public and act according to the situation warranted from time to time. He said that the lawyers should read various law journals, judgments and use the modern day techniques and equip themselves to serve people. The judgments delivered by the District Judges, Chief Judicial Magistrates and other lower court judges should be legally sustainable with social justice. The violence on the Dr. Ambedkar Law College campus was a sad episode. Such incidents should not happen again in any educational institution. Service to the poor and the downtrodden should be the motto of the lawyers, he added. Justice Mr. Krishnan said the State government and judiciary were working in tandem. The present government was supporting the judiciary and sanctioning funds for various projects. High Court Judge Justice R. Banumathy unveiled the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and Thiruvalluvar. She said the lawyers should serve the clients with dedication. Their aim should be to become a renowned lawyer or a judge. As the cases were mounting in various courts, lawyers were seeking an increase in the number of judges. “As the judgments take a long time, more and more people are opting for Alternate Dispute Redressal (ADR) system like the lok adalats. Hence, the lawyers should equip themselves to take on the ADR method to resolve the cases soon,” she said. Legal campsJustice Ms. Banumathy said as a backward district, legal awareness camps should be conducted in Dharmapuri to bring down the violence against women. She asked the district administration to start Women’s Centres to help the poor and illiterate women to get justice. A sum of Rs. 1.35 crore was sanctioned for the new building for the munsif and subordinate court in Harur. The 10-cent land allotted by the district administration was pending for approval with the land committee. With regard to the demand for a family court in Krishnagiri, she said that the Central government had a scheme to open family courts. If the Krishnagiri Bar Association submitted a petition it could be forwarded to the authorities concerned. Regarding the opening a labour court in Hosur, she asked the Bar Association to submit a proposal. District Collector P. Amutha said legal awareness camps would be organised in the district.
