CHENNAI: Residents of Tiruvottiyur made out a strong case for inclusion of their area in Chennai Corporation at a public consultation organised on Saturday by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

The public consultation, third in the series, was conducted to examine the feasibility of creating two new municipal corporations comprising urban and rural local bodies near the city.

“Tiruvottiyur should not be included in the proposed Ambattur Corporation. We want to be a part of Chennai Corporation,” said S. Mohana, a resident of Tiruvottiyur.

“As Ambattur is far away, we want to be part of Chennai Corporation. We have another option of creating a new corporation with headquarters at Tiruvottiyur,” said P.S. Rasanamoorthy, another resident

Fisheries Minister K.P.P.Sami said the government would make the right decision as most of the residents of Tiruvottiyur did not want to part of the Ambattur Corporation.

The State government should keep in mind the historical and cultural importance of Tiruvottiyur while taking a decision in this regard, said T.V. Murugan, member of Tamil Nadu Pradesh Congress Committee.

CMDA Vice-Chairperson Susan Mathew that due consideration would be shown by the government taking into account the fact that Tiruvottiyur was one of the earliest settlements. Some representatives of local bodies which were not included in the proposed new corporations submitted memorandums.

Suggestions invited

CMDA officials made a presentation on the significant features of the proposal with maps showing the limits of the proposed corporations and urged the residents to express their views.

CMDA officials said the proposed amalgamation of the areas of the new corporations was determined by contiguity, compactness, population, the rate of urbanisation, the income of the local body, electoral considerations, smooth transfer of records and revenue jurisdiction.

A few residents wanted the officials to create awareness among the public of the proposal before such consultations.

“The maps of the proposed new corporations will be available at the office of the local bodies concerned. Residents, NGOs and elected representatives can make their suggestions after going through the maps,” said a CMDA official.

Residents were asked to email their suggestions to vccmda@vsnl.net or by post to the CMDA, Thalamuthu Natarajan Maligai, Egmore, Chennai – by December 31. The previous consultations were held in Tambaram and Ambattur.
