VIJAYAWADA: The three-day Acharya Nagarjuna University Inter College Softball Tournament for men organised at P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts and Science began on Sunday, with 13 teams from various colleges, predominantly from the government colleges, participating in it. The tournament is being held on knockout-cum-league basis. Speaking at the inaugural function, college principal M. Satyanarayana emphasised the need for India emerging as the sporting nation on a par with China. “We have a population of more than 100 crore but we still lag behind in sports and games. With determination and commitment, youngsters should pursue their chosen game to bring laurels to the country,” he said. FelicitationsThe organising committee led by P. Ankamma Choudary of the host college, as a mark of respect, felicitated three physical directors P. Gandhi (Sarada College) V.V. Gandhi (SRR & CVR Government Degree College) and Siva Rama Krishnaiah (ANR College, Gudivada) for their contribution to the development of sports culture among students. Retired physical director of P.B. Siddhartha College of Arts and Science Sarweswara Rao felt happy to see more than 13 teams taking part in the tournament and exhorted the physical education teachers to promote soft ball among students. The tournament saw a thrilling match between V.R. Siddhartha Engineering College and the Government Degree College, Chebrolu, with the former defeating the latter by 23-22. The winner scored the crucial two runs in the extra time to emerge triumphant.
